You need backlinks on your website because backlinks help in...

  • search engine ranking
  • getting traffic
  • getting high Domain Authority and Page Authority

Search engines use various metrics for ranking and backlink is one of the major requirements. Backlinks mean other websites are pointing towards your site, which is taken positively by search engines. When a lot of websites backlinks to your site, your search engine ranking will not only crank up but you also get traffic.

Backlinks also help in Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA). DA and PA are the SEO metrics developed by an SEO company called Moz. It is measured in a scale of 0-100, where a higher number indicates higher DA and PA. While high DA and PA has nothing to do with search engine ranking as search engines have their own ranking algorithm, high DA and PA establish your website as an authority site.

Building Backlinks: The Black Hat Tactics

Some webmasters are so desperate to build backlinks that they resort to Black Hat SEO tactics such as

  • Using Automated tools to build backlinks
  • Buying volume backlinks from backlink seller
  • Using Private Blog Networks (PBN) to build backlinks
  • Creating a Link Wheel
  • Building backlinks on Link Farms

Building Backlinks: The White Hat Techniques

The best backlink practice is organic backlink. Organic backlink means people give backlinks voluntarily. This happens only when your website is useful and interesting. You get organic backlinks only when your website is an authority site. It takes time to establish your site as an authority site. Here are some other White Hat Backlink Techniques

Forums: Join a lot of forums and share your link on your profile and signature. A lot of Forums also have a marketplace section, where you can drop your link. In order to get most from forum backlinking, you have to choose a forum on your niche and also remain active on the forums.

Blogs: Find authority blogs on your niche, contact the owner and ask to give you backlinks. You can get backlinks from blogs in two ways, one by doing a guest post where you share your links in the content body, two, the blog owner gives you backlinks through anchor text on the blog posts. Alternatively, you can also do blog commenting and share your links on your comments.

Article sites: You can also join article sites, publish articles, and share your links on the article.

Building Backlinks: The Backlink Techniques You Should Avoid

  • Do not use Link Directories and Article Directories to build backlinks. Since these sites give a lot of backlinks, Search Engines do not take notice of such backlinks. In fact, search engines even penalize the sites that are offering a lot of backlinks.
  • Do not use Link Farm. Link Farms are the website consisting of only links.
  • Always build backlinks on the site that are ranked higher than your site or have high DA and PA.
  • Build backlinks for your home page as well as internal pages.
  • Become consistent with backlinking. Don't generate 100 backlinks today and no backlinks tomorrow.

I feel like backlinks is still a pretty big mystery, even though I have some authority backlinks to blog, it seems that overall traffic to the site is in decline, and I have not been able to tell if these authority links have done anything for the blog. A backlink that is added today, probably would not have any real effect for the next 4-8 weeks, and I think Google does an update every 3 months.

I have noticed DA go up by a point every now and then, so DA does increase every so often, and if it is a good backlink, then you may see it reflect in your TF fairly quickly, even as quick as 2-3 days, and TF has gone up a few points, so if DA is still going up, along with trust flow, then why is traffic to the site decreasing, rather then increasing?

It could be that the home page is not up, maybe this is having a more negative impact than I thought, however, it could be any number of factors, maybe the visitors that do come to the site are not interested in what they find, and if this is the case, then that would increase the bounce rate, and Google, overall, would award the site with less traffic. You can have all the authority backlinks in the world, but if visitors are not happy with what they find, then they will quickly leave the site.

Google does not reward failure with more traffic.

basically there are two types of backlinks, do follow and no follow. Do follow backlinks pass link juice and inform the search engines about the site. Search engines take this link juice as a cue and rank the site according. No follow backlinks do not pass link juice and search engines will not take a note of the site. While you haver to try for do follow backlinks, no follow backlinks can also be a good way to generate traffic.
