Online learning is growing at a significant rate and there is great diversity in the courses available. You now have a greater choice of courses than ever before and the popularity of eLearning will continue to grow.
If you are thinking about enrolling for an online learning course then you need to consider some important things. A very important consideration is the format of the course. There are some online courses that just use email to deliver the content. Others use technology such as voice and video conferencing and some even require mobile devices.
This is what you are likely to need as a minimum to participate in online learning:
- A computer device such as a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet
- Access to a good Internet connection (high speed recommended)
- A personal email address
- An office suite with word processing, slide presentation and spreadsheet applications
- Microphone (can be combined with a headset)
- Drive for CD and DVD
We recommend that use a fairly modern computer and the highest speed Internet access possible. A lot of online courses have a video element these days and if your computer or Internet connection is slow then this will be a disadvantage for you.
If you do not have your own computer equipment then you may be able to use a computer and the Internet at your local library. Find out if you can do this prior to enrolling in an online course.
Some people may own a laptop but not have Internet access at home. If this is the case for you then there are a number of public places now that provide free Internet access via WiFi. Examples of this are coffee shops, shopping malls, train stations and, book stores.
